Artist’s Notes

This work represents the biblical story of the Garden of Eden. Eve contemplates in beauty the wisdom and knowledge symbolized by the knot. The work is also about beauty — and a growing knowledge for the beautiful world around us.

Symbolism of the Knot

The Garden Knot represents the accumulation of knowledge. The eight-fold symmetry represents the union of heaven and earth, and an eternal desire to learn and gain wisdom.

The knot is used historically as a symbol of knowledge and wisdom. In Tibetan Buddhism, the endless knot (one of the eight auspicious symbols) is interpreted to represent the union of wisdom and method, and endless wisdom of the buddha.
